THIRTEEN GENERATIONS OF THE CHARBONNET FAMILY TREE
PART ONE - 1600-1880
Thiers, France
Birthplace of the Charbonnet Family
This family history is the combined work of two Louisiana historians, Ken Jenkins, who -- in tracing his (white) wife’s Charbonnet roots ran across mine (Betty Charbonnet Reid Soskin) and contacted me. My own effort had been modest to this point—but with their help over a two year period, much was accomplished. I’d been stuck somewhere in the mid-1800s and couldn’t get any further back—and wasn’t all sure that what I had found would stand close scrutiny. Then another researcher, Lisa Henderson, in Atlanta turned out to be another on the same path. She was working on the Charbonnet history for another member of the family still living in New Orleans.
We’ve joined forces, I’ll include our correspondence in the narrative. None of this would have been possible without the magic of the Internet. None of us have ever met.
The Charbonnet odyssey is fascinating. Although a few still obscure places need further scrutiny, over all, it tells a story worthy of all the work it has taken to reveal it.
I’ve lost track of Ken Jenkins since Katrina, and have no idea if he is still living. Lisa Henderson is still in Atlanta to my knowledge.
